Monday Morning Message – January 16, 2012

In honor of this day commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I offer the following reading material as an opportunity for each of us to remind ourselves that today is more than simply “a day off from work.”

The following are   resources from the website of the Rabbinical  Assembly that include: a conversation with Dr. King ten days before his assassination at the sixty-eighth RA convention, a fascinating description of a spontaneous rabbinic delegation to Birmingham in 1963, reflections on race written in the summer of 1965, Jewish reactions to Dr. King’s preaching, and some reflections on relations between the Jewish and African American community.

For those who were unable to attend our event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this past week- it was simply incredible! With nearly two hundred people in attendance, the warm feelings of friendship and understanding during this interfaith service were palpable, the message delivered by Reverend Aaron Gibson from Second Baptist Church of Long Branch was memorable, and the gospel music was truly inspiring. Look for pictures and a write up in the coming days on our website, and in the New Jersey Jewish News.

May each of you have a meaningful day, and may your reflections on this day serve as a reminder of our collective responsibility to bring more justice, equality and fairness into the world each and every day.
