Monday Morning Message – June 4, 2012

Last week I read a number of interesting articles about a variety of things happening in the Conservative Movement that I wanted to share with all of you. While each article is describing something different, I think that they all describe events that are overall positive for our movement.

1. These first two articles are about the Israeli government’s decision to recognize non-orthodox rabbis and start paying them a salary. While this is only a partial step in bringing a more pluralistic voice to our Jewish homeland, it is nevertheless a historic step in the right direction.

  Haaretz:Recognition of non-Orthodox rabbis is a partial – but hopeful – victory

2. The second piece is about a meeting that Conservative Jewish leaders had last week with President Obama at the White House. Below is an article from JTA as well as a blog entry from Dr. Arnold Eisen, the Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary.

3. Lastly, I am pleased to announce that the CJLS, Committee of Jewish Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement passed a paper last Thursday containing suggested rituals for marriage and divorce for same sex couples. To read more about these rituals, check out the following links.

As always, I am happy to hear your thoughts on any of these issues and speak with you in person, or via e-mail about any of these events. Enjoy!
