Tuesday Morning Torah – August 29, 2017

Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Houston, and the greater area affected by Hurricane Harvey over these past few days. With the memory of Super Storm Sandy in the not too distant past, we on the Jersey shore understand the devastation that can be caused by storms such as this. Our sages teach us that while “we are not obligated to complete the task, neither are we free to ignore it (Avot 2:1).”  The recovery from Hurricane Harvey is projected to take a very long time. During these first days of the storm, let us not ignore the plight of our brothers and sisters who are suffering due to this devastating storm. Please consider making a donation, of any amount, today.

Below are a few places to donate as well as a prayer that you might consider offering in the coming days.

1. Community Updates from the Jewish Federation in Houston-

2. The Hebrew Free Loan society of NY is joining forces with the Houston Hebrew Free Loan Association to make disaster recovery loans available to people in the Greater Houston area. This will help with long term recovery efforts and financial supports for individuals seeking to repair their homes, fix their cars, or make up for days of lost work.

Please go to the following link and put “disaster response loans” in the note.

3. Click here to donate through Nechama, a Jewish voluntary organization that provides natural disaster preparedness, response, and recovery services nationwide.  Nechama offers help to people affected by disaster on the basis of need regardless of religious affiliation and welcomes anyone willing to volunteer and serve others to join in their efforts.

4. Click here for multiple ways to help victims of Hurricane Harvey (helping children, animals, providing food and medical supplies to those in need).
